Chiefs to play at Mabhida

-

KAIZER Chiefs are coming back to the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) released the fixture list for the 2018/19 season, according to which the Amakhosi will play all their home matches at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.

This raised eyebrows regarding their relationship with the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. Chiefs and Mabhida have a three-year working relationship.

It was an unhappy ending to the first year of that relationship late last season. Chiefs supporters vandalised the stadium facilities following their side’s 2-0 defeat to Free State Stars in the semi-final of the Nedbank Cup.

But that behaviour from Chiefs’ supporters seems to have not ruined their relationship with the stadium management as they are set to come back to the coastal venue.

The manager at Moses Mabhida Stadium, Vusi Mazibuko, confirmed that Amakhosi are coming back.

“Chiefs will play three of their home league matches here at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

“They will release a statement soon to notify the public as to which games will be coming to Moses Mabhida and the dates when these will take place. We have concluded all the talks regarding the games,” Mazibuko said.

Chiefs draw large numbers to their home games at Moses Mabhida compared to the support they receive when they play at FNB Stadium.

Amakhosi hosted three of their league matches at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in the previous two seasons. Chiefs also brought some of their cup games to Durban as part of their deal with the stadium authorities.

The club is going through a three-year trophy drought. The last time they lifted silverware was in 2015. Stuart Baxter was still at the helm for Amakhosi then.

Chiefs will hope that their new man Giovanni Solinas brings their barren run to an end.
