and the outdoor facilities in a lovely courtyard area, which has a braai area and loungers overlookin­g one of the expansive valleys with its vineyards, somewhat dormant at this time of year. Inside there’s a bright and cheerful dining room overlookin­g the gardens and pool, and a lovely lounge with a fireplace is ideal for the chilly weather.

Breakfast the following morning was a delight, as the sun streamed into the dining room.

Laid out on the table, freshly baked croissants, a platter of cold meats and cheeses, and bowls with berries, muesli and rich farmhouse yoghurt beckoned.

The creamy scrambled eggs were cooked just right, accompanie­d with little vine tomatoes, mushrooms and rich and aromatic coffee, all providing the perfect foil for some slight overindulg­ence the night before.

A brisk walk to the winery and a leisurely browse through the adjacent art gallery and gift shop rounded off my stay. Walking back through the beautiful sculpture garden it was just another of those perfect days in Africa, in the Cape, in Franschhoe­k.
