Hugo’s Golf 5 GTI is a boss on the streets

- ASHWEN SINGH

FOR many petrolheads, owning a

Golf GTI is still very much a rite of passage. Thus, the GTI is no stranger to Kwazulu-natal’s performance-obsessed enthusiast community.

Christo Hugo, 36, is the proud owner of this week’s awesome 2007 Golf 5

GTI. Hugo, who works as a logistics manager at a local company, hails from Amanzimtoti.

His GTI features a restrained but effective upgrade to the car’s naturally well-powered factory-issued 2.0 FSI turbo power plant.

The upgrade spec comprises, foremost, an uprated engine management system, an induction setup and a down-pipe installation, ending in a double exhaust.

Hugo opted for the form and functional benefits of a lowered suspension system with a 40mm drop all round.

His car flaunts a set of Oemspec, 18-inch mag wheels which were customised in matt black. These were mated to a tetrad of 224/45/18 Bridgestone rubbers.

The well-appointed interior of Hugo’s GTI was left standard.

They say no Golf can be complete without a killer sound system. This one is certainly no exception. It “rocks out” with a high-quality acoustic installation that encompasses a Solar four-channel amplifier, a set of Pioneer mids and tweeters and a Pioneer 12-inch subwoofer.

“Last year I took part in the Nitro Crew SA record event and placed third for bass boxing,” said Hugo.

He did not disclose how much was spent on this build.

Hugo is incidentally a proud member of the popular, frequently referenced HLR crew (Hustle, Loyalty, Respect) performance car club, a local collective of like-minded auto enthusiasts.
