Ally’s VTEC kicks in with potent passion

- ASHWEN SINGH

HONDAS are popular, the world over, for their exceptional build quality and class-leading reliability. The introduction of VTEC technology (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control System) in the late 1990s transformed the brand through the introduction of the higher-powered VTEC engines, allowing Honda to make significant inroads in local auto performance circles.

Nineteen-year-old Zaakir Champ Ally is a local “petrolhead” residing in Phoenix, north of Durban. His 1998 Honda Civic VTEC is the subject of this week’s feature.

Mechanically, Ally’s VTEC Honda Civic boasts Honda’s D16A 1600 VTEC power plant, enhanced by way of a 50mm exhaust system.

Exterior customisations on Ally’s VTEC consist of C6 LED headlamps, LED park lamps and LED street glow.

The interior on this Honda was kept standard, with the exception of LED colour-changing footwell lighting.

As far as the ride is concerned, Ally’s VTEC flaunts a lowered suspension. The suspension is paired to a set of 15-inch “Spoon Sport” lightweight mag wheels, mated to

195 50 15 Dunlop SP7000D rubbers. A Brembo braking system was also fitted. Acoustically Ally’s car comprises a

JVC front loader, a pair of Starsound 6x9s and mids, powered by a 1500watt two-channel amplifier. A 12-inch Targa Predator subwoofer brings bass, powered by a Targa 1200-watt monoblock amplifier.

Ally is a member of the HLR crew (Hustle Loyalty Respect) car club. An undisclosed amount of money was spent on this build.
