KAIZER Chiefs and consistency are not good friends. This was proven again last night as they were held 0-0 by Chippa United in an Absa Premiership tussle at an empty Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

Amakhosi were looking to make it three out of three across all competitions following victories against Supersport United and Black Leopards.

But inconsistency has been their biggest enemy this season. In their two home matches at Moses Mabhida, Chiefs have collected only one point. They succumbed to a 1-0 defeat against Polokwane City in their first game at the iconic venue.

If Chiefs can’t find consistency, they will have to wait for another year to contest for the league title. They lost possession easily in the early stages of last night’s game. They failed to find rhythm and their play lacked fluidity in the attacking third.

Chiefs’ defence was again found wanting. Kurt Lentjies was given acres of space at the edge of the box and Lerato Manzini missed a sitter 25 minutes into the game. Chiefs have been vulnerable at the back this season, and were lucky to escape from Manzini’s attempt.

Lentjies was a menace for the Chiefs defence with his good movement, swift passing and ability to read the game well. Daniel Akpeyi denied George Maluleka with an acrobatic save before half-time and Chiefs finished the first half with a modicum of confidence.

Both benches made changes after the interval. Giovanni Solinas introduced Daniel Cardoso for the injured Mario Booysen while Eric Tinkler sacrificed Tercious Malepe and brought in Miquel Timm.

Chiefs were at sixes and sevens in the second half. Thabo Rakhale shot wide after he was put through by Lentjies.

Khama Billiat was isolated upfront, was more than a spectator and failed to make a telling contribution.
