Chetty murder suspect in dock

- CHARLENE SOMDUTH

THE man accused of killing Kelly Chetty made another appearance in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Friday. Chetty, 40, owner of KSS Logistics, was killed in a botched hijacking on Umlanghane Road in Avoca.

The accused, Siphmandla Buthelezi, was remanded pending his next court appearance in December.

In May, Chetty stopped his VW Golf to buy vegetables when he was accosted by robbers who attempted to hijack his vehicle. When he did not give in to their demands, they shot him and fled the scene in another vehicle they had hijacked.

His 12-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son were with him at the time and witnessed the father being shot.

Hours after Chetty’s death, police traced the suspects to a hostel in Kwamashu. Two suspects were killed in a shoot-out with police.

Buthelezi fled the scene but was later arrested at a clinic in Kwamashu where he had sought treatment for gunshot wounds.

Sadia, who was also shot, was taken to hospital where she later died.

Mhlongo said that the accused acted in the furtherance of a common purpose, which was to commit the crimes set out in the indictment.

Mkhize is due to appear before the High Court on November 19.
