THE WEEK 7

SEVEN DAYS SEVEN STORIES

- GRAEME FULLER

THE Natal Field Artillery might have startled some Durban residents yesterday morning during a rehearsal firing at the port, readying them for the Remembrance Sunday Memorial Service at the Cenotaph from 10am today.

They fired 25-pounder guns, known as G1s in South Africa.

Events start at 6am today, with bagpipers playing When the battle’s o’er at the Cenotaph. Proceedings move then to the SS Mendi Memorial at the harbour’s edge, near the Maritime Museum, for a short ceremony and wreath-laying.

The main service will be run by the South African Legion on behalf of the Durban Metro Council, and it starts at the Cenotaph, where the guns will fire both before and after two minutes of silence.

At sunset, the Moths and the SA Legion will march down Anton Lembede (Smith) Street to the Cenotaph. The lighting of the beacon of hope will take place at sunset, 6.26pm, today. |
