Chats boxing academy up for a challenge
Main event is ‘Box and Dine’, but Marc Soobramoney a contender for KZN heavyweight title
A BIG fight night is coming to town. Ten amateur fighters are to slug it out at the Chatsworth Youth Centre on December 7.
In a first for the Chatsworth Boxing Academy (CBA), a “Box and Dine” event will be hosted.
The event will include a round table set-up, which will offer those in attendance a chance to see some of the region’s brightest young stars in action.
Fighters from Chatsworth, umlazi, Kwamashu and Bluff will be a part of the slugfest.
“It’s an exciting initiative for the community of Chatsworth to get behind,” said event organiser John Marigadu. “We have hosted many tournaments in the past but this will be different. It will be a glitzy affair.”
The event will also highlight the centenary celebration of Nelson Mandela’s birth.
“We need more resources to raise the level of CBA. The Box and Dine evening will help us to raise funds and use some of it in the maintenance of the Nelson Mandela Youth Centre, our training base,” Marigadu said.
The CBA is already 10 years old and has produced professional fighters like Marc Soobramoney and Jayden Matthew.
Marigadu said more talent could be unearthed but the lack of resources was a stumbling block.
“It is not a popular sport, so the event we’ve planned will help us create awareness.
“Our people need to see it to understand what boxing is about,” Marigadu said.
Meanwhile, Soobramoney has landed himself a shot at the vacant KZN Heavyweight title. He is set to fight Richards Bay based Josh
