2018 HIGHLIGHTS AND LOWLIGHTS

- BUHLE MBONAMBI @Buhlebonga

Aries (March 21 - April 20)

Over time, you’ve learnt that tolerance works well for you. But there are some situations that can still test your patience. What you should look out for this month are conflicts of ego.

Taurus (April 21 - May 20)

The cosmos gives Taureans a head start this week by stirring ambition. Your career possibilities expand, as does your financial outlook.

Gemini (May 21 - June 21)

There’s a sensual feeling to this week that makes love an easy affair. This is a cycle you certainly won’t want to break. There’s a chance of finding a karmically linked soul.

Cancer (June 22 - July 22)

This is your week to discover that change can bring blessings. If offered an opportunity, don’t hesitate – this chance won’t come again for some time. Sort out money problems now.

Leo (July 23 - August 23)

The cosmos offers financial opportunities, but asks for patience. Delayed gratification isn’t usually your style but persistence will pay high dividends. In matters of the heart, singles attract someone special.

Virgo (August 24 - September 22)

You’ve had a taste of freedom and want more. Though the planets counsel a degree of care, you want to throw caution to the wind. Just as well your cash supply looks plentiful – even if it is borrowed.

Libra (September 23 - October 23) Loosen up a little, Libra. Fortunately, the planets make it easier for you by encouraging a change of direction. There are bound to be moments of trepidation, but this week’s focus is on pushing past known limits.

Scorpio (October 24 - November 22)

This week, you tire of the endless debates, investigations and exploring of options. There comes a time when the course must be struck, and for you that’s now.

Sagittarius (November 23 - December 21)

You can expect too much from relationships, and when your idealistic requirements are short-changed, disappointment may follow. Ask yourself: have I been too demanding, or withdrawn?

Capricorn (December 22 - January 20) If life has become too predictable – this week, try something new. Start, perhaps, by making one small change every day. Be bold, Capricorn. The gain? Delightful surprises.

Aquarius (January 21 - February 18) Many Aquarians can expect a little extra cash and more variety in their lives. Changes at home keep you on your toes. Though you’re usually a workaholic, this week could find you ducking out of the escape hatch early for the upcoming festivities.

Pisces (February 19 - March 20)

You’re on your moral high horse in a week when standing up for your principles could mean a solitary ride into the sunset. You can’t always expect others to please you. Equal opportunity means just that. A little bit of give and take can work wonders. WHAT a year. I’ve been reading a whole lot of year-end lists, and there are so many “Wait, this happened this year?” moments. That’s how long (and mostly dreadful) this year has been.

Personally, I lost many people I loved. Some passed on, while others decided it’s time they vacated my life. That includes celebrities that I was massive fans of, like Kanye West. I don’t recognise him anymore.

Then there was Blake Lively, who decided to wear suits for a film promotion, and when someone commented on it, she decided to lash out at them and tried to make it a sexism issue when it really wasn’t.

Then there was the list of men (and women) we cancelled, thanks to many sexual assault victims coming forward with their stories.

But there were some good moments, and those are the ones I want to focus on.

BLACK PANTHER

What a movie. What a soundtrack. What amazing costumes. What a story! It was magic all around, and the cast was brilliant. The cinematography was gobsmackingly amazing, as was the direction. Black Panther was probably the most anticipated movie of the year and people actually dressed up in their Africa-inspired garments to watch it, around the world. Wakanda forever!

CRAZY RICH ASIANS

Talk about decadence! The surprise smash hit of 2018, this first mainstream romcom starring an all-asian cast had millions packing movie houses from August, and it received universal love.

FILL-UP MOSES MABHIDA

I’ll be the first to admit to not being a fan of Cassper Nyovest, nor his music, but his concert in Durban a few weeks ago was a success.

He is probably one of a few local musicians who can put on a stadium show. The whole world saw it at the Global Citizen Festival Mandela 100 in Joburg a few weeks ago. Cassper is a star.

SOUTH AFRICAN TELEVISION

I believe we are in the golden age of South African TV. From the beautifully shot Isibaya and The River, to the edgy story lines on Scandal! and Diamond City; the familiarity of 7de Laan; the current affairs of Isidingo; and the impressive Afrikaans drama soapies.

And finally…

THE NEW SM

We had a makeover this year, going younger and national.

Enjoy the holidays!
