A Golf Mk1 with big aspirations

- ASHWEN SINGH

THE Volkswagen Golf Mk1 is a car that is no stranger to the KZN community of “petrol heads”.

Kylan Chetty is the 23-year-old owner of this 2008 Mk1 Citigolf

1.4i 8V. Chetty, who works as a quality inspector at a local injection moulding company, lives in Chatsworth, south of Durban. His hobbies include attending car shows and working on his car.

His Mk1 features minimalistic but effective upgrades to the car’s naturally aspirated 1400 8V fuel injected power plant. This upgrade comes mainly by way of the fitment of an uprated 272 cam and a 50mm performance exhaust system .

As far as the suspension goes, Chetty opted for an ultra-low drop to the vehicles ride height, made possible thanks to a set of Maxtrac coilovers. The suspension was teamed to a tetrad of 17-inch Long Beach mag wheels, paired to a set of Nankang 185 35 17 rubbers.

The interior boasts a set of

Polo GTI seats, as well as a Polo Vivo steering wheel, while the cars exterior flaunts a gleaming paintjob, a large Webasto tilt-andslide sunroof, crystal smoked cross headlights, an “R-line” rear spoiler, as well as a set of windshields.

Like most Volkswagens, none can be complete without a sound system. This one features the modest but high quality acoustic likes of a Pioneer front loader, a quartet of Pioneer mids and a pair of Pioneer 6x9 speakers.

An undisclosed amount of money was spent on this build.
