SUNSCREEN and shades will be in greater demand for much of the coming week as temperatures are expected to reach a high of 35°C in Durban and 37°C in Pietermaritzburg, according to weather forecasts.

Since the start of summer on December 1, KZN has experienced fluctuating weather patterns with spells of rainfall and blustery conditions.

South African Weather Service forecaster Julius Mahlangu said the recent unpredictable weather typified Durban summers.

He predicted near “heatwave-like conditions” until Thursday, which would entice beachgoers and sunseekers.

“Temperatures across KZN will range from 27°C to beyond 30°C. Cooler conditions can only be expected after Thursday, when temperatures are expected to drop to between 20°C and 28°C, with little rainfall,” he said.

Mahlangu’s forecast will be good news for the expected influx of visitors.

KZN’S MEC for economic development and environmental affairs, Sihle Zikalala, said his department expected about a million visitors, local and international, to descend on Durban’s beaches this summer and boost the local economy.

About enduring the sweltering conditions, Mahlangu said staying hydrated and wearing appropriate clothing could prevent heat cramps, exhaustion or heat stroke. Sunscreen and hats were imperative.
