Grieving family seeks footage of fatal accident

- TASCHICA PILLAY

A DURBAN family is seeking video footage of the accident that claimed their daughter’s life.

Sadiyah Cassim, 18, died on Wednesday in hospital, hours after an accident involving her vehicle and a mini-bus taxi on the M13, near the Westwood Mall.

According to a message circulating on social media, “no mercy was shown by the taxi driver nor any of the passengers he was transporting. He (the taxi driver) and his passengers drove away from the scene, leaving her to succumb to her injuries.”

But Sadiyah’s sister, Nazmeera Cassim, who was unaware of the message being circulated, said it was false, adding that the driver remained at the scene.

“We are now trying to get camera footage from businesses in the area to establish how the accident happened,” said Cassim.

She said her sister, an accounting student, was returning from Varsity College when the accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon.

She said shortly after the accident her grandparents, Mariam and Ismail Rahiman, who were driving pass, saw it was Sadiyah’s car.

“One of the passengers from the taxi was trying to help my sister. My grandparents spoke to Sadiyah who responded by nodding,” she said.

She said the family were battling to accept the loss of their “baby”.

“She was the light and love of the family. She was selfless and loved unconditionally. She always put everybody else first,” said Cassim.
