Three facilities available in Vryheid and Kokstad in KZN and Wesselsbron in the Free State

- JAN DE BEER

TWO complete abattoirs in KZN and another in the Free State will be among the lots for In2assets’ first major multi-property auction for this year in Durban on February 7. The sale will be held at 11am at the Durban Country Club in Isaiah Ntshangase Road.

The abattoirs, sourced from Meadow Meats – which is in business rescue – are in Vryheid and Kokstad in KZN, and Wesselsbron, a small maize-farming town 75km south of Bothasville in the Free State.

On offer will be:

An abattoir with 22 cold rooms, offices, deboning facilities, and various outbuildings at 27 Bloekom Street in Vryheid. The abattoir, on a 3.9ha plot, can slaughter 200 cattle a day. There is a generator and diesel supply on site.

A 15 coldroom facility in Lower Dower Street in the Kokstad industrial area on a 2.25ha site with halaal certification. This abattoir can handle up to 100 cattle daily. The abattoir has water supply of 50 000 litres plus diesel and generators.

Another halaal-certified abattoir in Fourth Street, Wesselsbron on a plot of over 8 300m² equipped with 10 000 litres diesel tank and capacity to handle up to 120 cattle and 100 sheep a day. Office space includes a conference room and full halaal prayer facilities for staff.

Auctioneer Andrew Miller says all the abattoir buildings are in good condition, designed for efficient processing and fully equipped in accordance with all regulations of abattoir health codes, with annual maintenance performed accordingly.

According to its website, Meadow Meats is a family-owned business founded in 1986 by the late Kobus Dicks, who had over 30 years’ experience in the meat industry. Dicks died in an aircraft accident in December 2015. The company has 400 employees and all three branches run their own fleet of trucks with workshop facilities for the vehicles. The website says it is “one of the biggest C-grade slaughterers” in South Africa.

Live-auction streaming and bidding for the disposal of Meadow Meats’s assets will be made available by In2assets at Kokstad, Bloemfontein and Vryheid to and from the Durban sale.
