Damien’s VW is rocking the Citi
THIS week we welcome back the familiar Volkswagen Citigolf. One of the things I love about the Citi is that it is possibly one of the most scaleable vehicles on South African roads.
It has defied the ageing process through a seemingly perpetual list of enthusiast-ordered performance and aesthetic permutations.
Damien Naidoo, who has previously featured, is a 23-year-old process controller who lives in Phoenix. He spends his spare time working on styling his car and attending car shows.
His rebuilt Citi 1.4 is featured this week. Mechanically, it has minimalist but effective upgrades in the form of a performance branch mated to a Primaforce 50mm front-to-back exhaust system, which adds lustre to the factory standard 1.4, naturally aspirated, carburettor-fed power plant.
Road-holding is provided by a stealthy Cobra coil-over set-up. A set of 15-inch OEM Citi Rox mag wheels wrapped in 165/50/15 Hifly stretch tyres add form and function.
Exterior aesthetics upgrades include the fitment of Angel eye headlights, “Life” tail-lights, a Carado front lip and retrofitted windshields, a bonnet guard and a host of “on-body” customised graphics.
It is often said that no Volkswagen is complete without a killer sound system. This one features a Kenwood double DIN head unit, a quartet of Pioneer 6-inch Mids powered by a Starsound four-channel amplifier, a pair of 8-inch Limpids and a pair of Pioneer super tweeters. A custom boot set-up has a duet of 12-inch Starsound subwoofers wired to a Linertec Monoblock.
It was not disclosed how much was spent on this build.
Naidoo is a member of the HLR crew (Hustle Loyalty Respect) performance car club, a local collective of like-minded auto enthusiasts.
