High five for Chatsworth United fast bowler

- MYRON NAICKER

IT’S not every day that a bowler claims a hat-trick, but taking five wickets in consecutive balls is rare.

Chatsworth youngster Sholin Chetty, 10, produced a remarkable spell of bowling last weekend.

Sholin’s five-for-two from three overs helped Chatsworth United beat local rivals Chatsworth Sporting in a Durban and District Under-11 game at the Road 114 cricket field in Havenside.

After conceding two runs in his first two overs, he upped his performance in his third over to dismantle the Sporting batting line-up.

The Northdene Primary School pupil clean bowled four batsmen. The fifth batsman was caught in the covers. Sholin’s last delivery was a dot ball.

While it could not be verified whether Sholin’s feat was an agegroup record, Cricket South Africa’s head statistician Andrew Samson described it as a special achievement.

“I felt that it was a great achievement and I was very proud of my game,” Sholin said.

His favourite player is Proteas’ fast bowler Dale Steyn and he dreams of playing for the Proteas in the future.

“Steyn takes a lot of wickets and I want to be just like him,” the youngster said.

Chatsworth United boss Mike Govender believes Chetty has the potential to go a long way in the game.

“I am simply over the moon. To witness that spell was special for me,” Govender said.

“Sholin is part of a group of 50 youngsters between the ages of 8 and 13 at our club. I am sure more players will be unearthed in the coming years,” Govender added.

Rajesh Ishwar, who is the club secretary and principal at Northdene, said he was proud of Sholin.

“He is passionate about the game and that shows both on and off the field. We are looking forward to watching him showcase his talent on the bigger stage,” Ishwar said.
