How about taxing the unruly taxi drivers?

- SHIREEN LAKHI Mooi River

THE government taxes the public for plastic packets, purportedly for recycling to protect the environment and for environmental education.

Similarly, the sugar and sin taxes are to discourage the use of sugar and harmful substances and for education campaigns in this regard.

The industry that causes havoc is the taxi one. How many drivers actually read the “letters to the editor” columns in newspapers or listen to “sophisticated” talk shows during the day? Clearly, the driving and the results of this anarchy are getting worse.

Perhaps the government should tax the taxi industry and use the funds to educate taxi drivers.

They can be taught the importance of following traffic rules like stopping at stop streets, not going through red traffic lights and using the stops provided for buses and taxis.

Simply stopping at an intersection, traffic light or other inconvenient place frustrates other road users, wasting time and fuel. It indicates a clear lack of consideration for the rest of us, as well as a disregard for breaking the law.

Taxi drivers don’t care about traffic violations and police seem to be too afraid to bring them to book.

Then there is overloading, speeding and unroadworthy vehicles.
