Glenwood left in the dark

-

SOME parts of Glenwood have been hit by power outages, even during non-load shedding times, since early February.

Annette Lee, a Brand Avenue resident, said the power often went off for between three and 16 hours, as was the case on Wednesday and Thursday.

Frustrated residents questioned why it took so long to fix the problem.

“The problem is persistent, and nobody seems interested in updating us on when it will be resolved. We have not been told what is wrong or notified when there will be outages so that we can prepare ourselves.

“Sometimes we wake up in the morning without electricity, but people across our road have power. Why is it taking so long to restore the power every time?” she asked.

Siphesihle Masuku, another resident, said the municipality had promised the problem would be resolved “urgently” but it had gone on for more than a month.

“The sad part is businesses, churches and old age homes are affected. Many people and businesses have had to close early,” she said.

Glenwood councillor Mmabatho Tembe said she addressed the issue with the electricity department, which said that the matter was receiving attention. “I was told there was a major cable fault that led to constant outages.

“Electricity infrastructure had to undergo major maintenance to meet demand, which caused more outages, according to city officials, “she said.

The municipality did not respond to our queries by the time of going to print.
