THERE’S a new kid on the radio industry block.

Megazone Bollywood is set to go live on 104.8 FM next month in the umhlanga, Durban, and surrounding areas.

The station is currently streaming online via Megazone Media to more than 400 000 listeners across the world.

It broadcasts mostly Bollywood music, a morning religious programme, local news and sport.

Vishal Maharaj, Megazone Media chief executive, said the move to radio had been a two-year journey.

“Because of the high costs of data, we couldn’t reach those who weren’t able to live stream.

“We began the process of acquiring an FM frequency from Icasa (the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa). We are thankful to them as we can now reach more people via radio. We will also restructure our line-up,” he said.

The station will broadcast live from 6am to midnight.

“Moving to radio has created many employment opportunities for DJS, producers and technicians. Our playlist will change according to what our audience prefers,” he said.

Lotus FM and Hindvani, both based in Durban, offer similar content.

“We do wish our counterparts well, and competition is good. We are offering variety to our audiences and have an open-door policy where listeners are able to visit our studio and meet our jocks, so that we can develop a bond with them,” Maharaj said.
