Blast from the past as 60-year-old club returns

- MYRON NAICKER

THE famous yellow and green of the Young Springboks is set to make a return to amateur football circles this season.

“It is the awakening of a sleeping giant which turns 60 this year,” club chairperson Terry Muthusamy said, confirming that the club had secured Safa Phoenix Premier League status for the 2019 season.

After six years of dormancy, the Young Springboks are back with an exciting group of youngsters, which heralds a new era for the club.

“We are very excited to be back. There is a buzz in the air, a household name is coming back,” Muthusamy said.

Springboks merged with Mount Edgecombe Sporting in 2014 but Muthusamy said there was a need to restore the club that was established in 1959 to its original form.

They became a big brand in amateur football during the seventies and eighties, winning the Clover Cup and numerous league titles.

“We needed a club to represent the people of Mount Edgecombe and Campbells Town. More importantly, we needed a platform for our footballers to shine.”

The club will be made up of players from Campbells Town United, who won the Division One title as well as the Unity Cup last season

“Many of these players have family who played for Springboks in the past so they understand our history and what it means to play for the club.

“These players have been together for a long time, the majority of them were part of the same team that won the under-15 title back in 2011. They know each other well and play a good brand of football.”

Muthusamy says Springboks administration will bring financial backing to the club as well as create a structure for the future.

“We do not want to lose this club again,” he said.

“Winning will come, but for now it is important for us to re-establish ourselves and find our footing.”
