Government can step in to help the homeless

SOMETHING should be done that would lead to making homeless people self-sufficient members of society, rather than bickering over laws and measures that treat them as nothing more than dirt to be swept under the rug.

The government can prevent more people becoming homeless by: Introduce tax breaks for landlords so it is feasible to lease properties; and make rental affordable for all. Ensure there is early access to drug and alcohol rehab services and steps taken to tackle existing waiting lists. There must also be enough quality emergency accommodation with supports.

Provide funding for local community services as required nationwide. Provide free medical care so that everyone who does not have health care would have access to quality, affordable, medical and mental health treatment. This would allow the assessment of all the homeless in a no confrontational manner to see what their needs are so that these can be addressed.

As a society, we have a duty to ensure people have a home.
