Park in a sorry state

-

GLENWOOD residents have been “deprived” of enjoying the benefits of Bulwer Park due to its unkempt state.

Regular visitors to the park said they had been waiting patiently for ethekwini Municipality’s parks and recreation department to attend to their complaints about the lack of maintenance at the park.

Falling branches, overgrown grass and litter strewn all over the place, were among issues they had raised.

The park, which has a children’s jungle gym and outdoor gym for adults, attracts scores of people due to its proximity to blocks of flats and schools.

However, some said they were disappointed with the state of the park and raised concerns about health and safety.

Martin Burger, who resides in Helen Joseph road, claimed that the municipality had not cut the grass since the beginning of the year.

As a result, in some parts of the park, the grass had grown to such an extent it was difficult for people to walk there.

Burger said he and neighbours used to walk their dogs at the park after a hot day, but now found it difficult to do so given the condition of the park.

“We wonder how a busy place like this gets to this point. This is very poor service. There is also petty crime taking place here and it can be attributed to the poor condition of the park,” Burger said.

“This area is appreciated by many people. I don’t understand why the municipality fails to make safety and maintenance a priority.

“I have seen other parks, which are not in demand like this one, in a better condition. We are pleading with the municipality to bring change in this park.”

Vincent Dludla, a gym fanatic, said he was concerned about the state of the park, which he said was attracting vagrants.

“As you can see some parts are now bushy and need to be cut. I am very concerned because there are school kids and women who come here for a jog and exercise after work,” he said.

The municipality had not responded to queries at the time of publication.
