Woman successfully harvests water from air

-

BETH KOIGIA from Kenya, has co-founded an innovative way to produce water from the air in regions that are drought-stricken, CNN reported on Friday.

Koigi, who co-founded Majik Water, has created a new source of clean drinking water by harvesting it from the air.

She feels there are many untouched resources, and the air is one of them, CNN reported.

“The system uses condensation technology,” Koigi said.

Using fans, a machine pulls in cold wet air, which is then passed through a condensation process, turning it into water. The water that is collected then flows down a tube and into a collection tank.

On Majik Water’s official Youtube page, Koigi explains how she started the business in 2017 because she found out that more than 50% of Kenyans do not have access to clean water.

In addition to the problems of water filtration systems, Koigi details the link between water shortages and water contamination.

Majik Water sees a world where water is democratised, so all are able to have access to the valuable resource, even in their own home, she said.

“At Majik, we want to see a world where a woman doesn’t have to walk for four hours just to get 20 litres of water.

“As long as you have air, you have fresh drinking water,” Koigi said.

According to CNN, Koigi says Majik Water’s largest systems have the capacity to produce up to 100 000 litres of pure drinking water a day.

The name Majik Water is derived from “Maji”, meaning water in Swahili, while “k” stands for “kavuno”, which translates to harvesting in Swahili.
