Police seek former first lady wanted on murder charges
POLICE are searching for Lesotho’s former first lady who is accused of murder after a court revoked her bail, the deputy police commissioner said yesterday.
Maesaiah Thabane was arrested in January and charged with the murder of the estranged first wife of her husband, then-prime minister Thomas Thabane. She was later released on bail.
On Friday, the High Court revoked her bail after police challenged an earlier ruling, saying she could be a flight risk.
The appeal also included witness testimony saying they feared for their lives if Thabane was released on bail.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Paseka Mokete said officers went to her home to inform her of the court’s decision and re-arrest her, but she was not there. “We need to arrest her so that she could apply for a bail while in detention.”
The former prime minister is also under investigation for the murder. Lipolelo Thabane was shot dead in 2017. Maesaiah and Thomas Thabane marryied just weeks later. |
