Frustrated residents fill potholes
CHATSWORTH residents have been forced to cover potholes with sand.
Residents of Westcliff Drive said they were fed up with poor and non-service delivery from government.
Cedric Layton Moodley, a resident and member of the community police forum, said there was big hole that was dug up to repair a leak a week ago and not cordoned off properly.
“We had to cordon it off with security tape. Prior to us securing the area there had been a serious accident where a driver tried to avoid going into the hole and was struck by another vehicle.
“We have been covering the potholes with sand. Until the municipality repairs it, we will have to fill sand daily if we have to. Cars are being damaged and we cannot have any more accidents because of people trying to avoid potholes,” said Moodley.
He said they know the city will not undertake the repairs, therefore, they have to do it themselves.
“We paying for service delivery, yet we are not getting it. We are being robbed. It is a sad situation. We have also asked for speed calming measures but still nothing,” said Moodley.
Tony Govender, a ward councillor, said it was unacceptable that the repairs were not being done.
“Motorists whose vehicles have been damaged need to go to the police and open charges against the municipality for not giving due notice way before that there is a crater ahead. Also the street lights don't work.
“The potholes in Westcliff Drive is as a result of shoddy workmanship. You can’t have a main road in this unacceptable condition. A number of cars travel on this road at high speed and to now have a huge hole left after
it was dug up,” he said.
Govender said it was a matter that needed to be attended to urgently.
Last year a fed-up Kwadukuza community activist resorted to planting banana trees in potholes in the Kwazulu-natal north-coast town to grab the attention of the local municipality.
Meanwhile earlier this year, Howick residents took the opportunity to have a little fun while highlighting the massive pothole problem on Curry's Post Road by hosting a “pothole fishing competition”.
