PROTESTS erupted in multiple cities across the country after former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan was shot in the leg at a political rally on Thursday in an apparent assassination attempt, reports said. Khan had been leading a convoy of thousands from Lahore towards the capital, Islamabad, campaigning for fresh elections after being ousted from office in April. He escaped with a bullet wound to his right calf, while several of his Pakistan Tehreek-e-insaf party officials were also hit by gunfire aimed at their container truck as it drove through a crowd near Gujranwala. Police rushed to negotiate with protesters to clear them from the roads. | IANS, AFP

UKRAINE has condemned the “mass forced relocation” of its citizens living in regions occupied by Russia. “The Russian occupation administration began mass forced relocation of residents of the left-bank of the Kherson region to the temporarily occupied Crimea or to Russia,” the Ukrainian foreign ministry said. Moscow-installed Kherson governor Vladimir Saldo said he was moving people further into the region or to Russia because of the risks of a “massive missile attack”. Kyiv’s forces were preparing for a battle to retake the region’s main city, Kherson, and the surrounding areas on the right bank of the Dnipro after making gains in Ukraine’s east and south. |

MIGRANT rescue group SOS Mediterranee said this week that it had called on the governments of France, Greece and Spain to help find a port for 234 people rescued while trying to reach Europe, after Italy and Malta failed to answer. The ship was south of Sicily. The NGO said it was the first time it had pleaded for direct help from the three countries. Since embarking on its latest mission, the group asked Malta and Libya, the country from which most migrants hoping to reach Europe from Africa depart, to allow them into port since they were the nearest countries to the rescue sites. A ship operated by SOS Humanity is also stranded with hundreds of migrants on board, SOS Med said. |
