Oscar Pistorius ‘too toxic’ to get a job

THREE months after being released from prison, convicted killer Oscar Pistorius is sweeping church floors as voluntary work.

The disgraced paralympic runner was found guilty of the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day in 2013.

He was sentenced the following year to 13 years behind bars.

During court proceedings, Pistorius, 37, said he had heard a noise in the bathroom in the middle of the night and believed that Steenkamp was an intruder. He had opened fire through the door, killing her.

The New York Post this week reported that Pistorius had reached out to members of the international Paralympic Committee asking for work in any capacity.

“He’s too toxic to work with now,” one of the members told that publication.

They further reported that the double amputee was doing light maintenance and janitorial work at a church his uncle attends.

At the time of his release, the Department of Correctional Services said Pistorius would be admitted into the system of Community Corrections and would be monitored until the expiry date of his sentence in 2029, adding that the general parole conditions would apply.

A parole officer checks on him at random hours of the day and he is also subject to alcohol and drug testing. Pistorius is also forbidden from contacting Steenkamp's family, posting on social media, giving interviews or releasing a memoir on his experiences.

Pistorius is reported to be hiding out at his rich, church-going uncle Arnold’s house in Pretoria.

He has listed volunteer work at NG Kerk Waterkloof, which his uncle attends, on his parole paperwork.

A source who spotted Pistorius told the New York Post: “I almost didn’t recognise him. “His hair is longer and he’s got a beard. He’s also not as lean as I expected. You would never know he was an athlete; he’s just not the same,” the unnamed source said. |
