Pinky Mothie film production is on track

- NIYANTA SINGH

WORK on the groundbreaking movie on the life and times of the legendary doyen of the entertainment industry, Pinky Mothie, will start in earnest at the end of the month.

With casting taking place over this coming weekend, local businessman Jay Ramnundlall, the chief executive of Richfield, has been cast in an important role, while award-winning Bollywood director Amit Chheda will be at the helm of the movie.

The film, the title of which is being withheld for the moment, is being produced by the non-profit Youth Film Development Project.

The project is set to be a benchmark for skills development in the local film industry, with a choice of more than 30 emerging film-makers to be groomed by the experienced Mumbai team which has worked on international Bollywood hits like Ek Tha Tiger and Dabaang 2.

The international cast has already been chosen and includes dance choreographer Urvi Jagar, who has worked with Bollywood greats Aamir Khan and Salman Khan.

The director of photography is Biswal Bhusan.

Mothie said this week that the movie was a culmination of a project that her late husband Mothie Doorgepersadh, a show business producer, had envisaged.

“The movie is all about my life in the industry, and the vision my late husband had for it, his death, and how we picked up on his aspirations.

“It deals with our experiences of apartheid. When he first thought of producing a movie, he was turned away as a nonwhite producer.

“Much of the movie deals with how the Indian community lived under the state of apartheid,” said Mothie.

Mothie said they were grateful to Richfield, Hair Sensation, Indian Delights, The Pavilion Hotel and Wellton Solutions, who had come on board, offering various services to the crew and production teams.

Auditions will be held on Sunday, August 21, at 2pm at 35 Avondale Road, Greyville. Send an e-mail to office.yfdp@gmail.com for more information.
