Honour heroic six
I HAVE to concur with Karinda Jagmohan in the Tribune Herald “Heroic Padavattan Six deserve a memorial”.
It is important to support the Padavattan family for a memorial, which will serve as a platform to eradicate religious and cultural division in our country.
The historic 1917 rescue mission conducted by the Padavattan Six should be honoured by erecting a statue for these heroes. It is important to preserve their history and legacy. After a hundred years the Indian community still remembers the Padavattan Six.
History has many parts, and the past cannot and should not be wiped off. I am perturbed and rather sad that Durban, which has the largest concentration of Indians, has made no effort in having a commemoration or erecting a statue. The authorities should also apply their minds. We also have an 1860 monument committee, who should meet with committee member Morgan Subramanian and the Padavattan family to discuss the way forward.
