Befuddled how SA can thank DRC
I READ in the news that President Cyril Ramaphosa had praised DRC President Joseph Kabila.
The facts are that Kabila was considering defying the constitution of his country so that he could again stand for the presidency, illegally extending his “head of state” status beyond his current 17 years.
The fact that he has now decided not to run for the position does not deserve praise from South Africa. How can we be grateful and thank Kabila for not defying his country’s constitution?
It should be a given that
African leaders adhere to their constitution and toe the line, like Nelson Mandela did.
Why is it that Africa is full of dictators and the spineless African Union does not speak out against autocratic leaders?
Democracies in Africa need to ostracise and condemn dictators, or leaders that resist leaving office like Kabila. Come on, Africa, you can do better. Do not blame colonisation for evil dictators who do not tolerate opposition.
