New film promises drama for couple

- DOREEN PREMDEV

REVENGE is the theme for the next instalment in the Broken Promises franchise. Filming for Broken Promises Vengeance will start next month.

The new film comes hot on the heels of the success Broken Promises 4 Ever enjoyed at the box office.

Director, producer and actor Kumaran Naidu said they came into cinema as “underdogs” but quickly proved their worth, despite the film being released at the same time as the Hollywood hit Mission Impossible – Fallout, starring Tom Cruise.

“Cinema didn’t really have the confidence that we would be able to draw the crowds,” said Naidu. “But on opening day, almost all the seats were sold out. We grossed more than a million in the first weekend alone.

“To date, we have grossed more than R3.5 million on minimal screens. We opened with only 15 screens, whereas most movies open with at least 25. This is an impressive victory for a South African Indian film.”

Broken Promises Vengeance (the “V” is the Roman numeral for five) is expected to be released in cinemas in July, said Naidu. It continues the story of the troubled couple Mandoza and Skye.

“The drama will centre around the wedding – Mandoza and Skye are from two different religious backgrounds. The big question is what wedding ceremony are they going to have,” said Naidu.

“There is immense pressure on them from both sides of the family and they don’t know who to please.”

Naidu said he wrote the story from the view of an instigator – wondering what would happen if he made the harshest situations come to pass, he said.

“With the new film I want to push Manzoda’s character (played by Theshan Naicker) to a point of almost no return,” said Naidu.

“It’s important to break him, and see how he handles the situation.”

The main characters will be Naicker as Mandoza; Kogie Naidoo as his controlling grandmother Amsugi;

Rani Pillay plays the “cool” aunt Bommi and Pribashni Govender, who takes over the character of Skye.

The film will be shot in central Durban, Umhlanga, Ballito, Overport, Pietermaritzburg and Margate.
