From the base of Cowies Hill to the top of Botha’s Hill, the runners have to climb 500m in just 22km – a taxing task for even seasoned campaigners.

Botha’s Hill was named after Cornelius Botha who opened a wayside inn, Botha’s Halfway House, for wagon drivers making their into the hinterland from Durban. The former Rob Roy Hotel, now a retirement complex, is in much the same spot.

This part of the province tends to be cooler than Durban. The fresh air and tranquil beauty of the area are constant attractions for artists and crafters which led to the creation of the 1000 Hills Experience route, which follows the same route as the ultra-marathon taking visitors through scenic valleys, gorges, forests, rivers and over a succession of rolling hills.

There are six driving routes through leafy towns and quaint little villages, while off-shoots of the main road wind through Krantzkloof Gorge and Inanda Dam, with pubs, tea gardens, as well as hotels and guest houses dotted along the way.
