Volleyball growing in the Chatsworth region

- MYRON NAICKER

THE Chatsworth and Districts Volleyball Association (CDVA), which has hosted a competitive league structure in the region for more than a decade, rounded off their first season recently.

Celtic captured the club’s men’s league while Titans were crowned winners in the women’s division.

“We are just so happy to have the game back up and running in Chatsworth,” the CDVA’S president, Ajith Maganlal said.

“Our league games started at 306 Grounds in Westcliff and then moved to an indoor venue at the Chatsworth Youth Centre.

“In a short space of time, we have come a long way.”

What is encouraging for the administration of the club is the number of new young players being introduced to the sport.

“We ran a youth development programme to teach youngsters basic skills,” Maganlal said.

“Fundamental technique is very important so we focused on passing the ball, service and simple understanding of how the game works.”

Another notable achievement for the CDVA was Celtic featuring in Volleyball South Africa’s premier club competition, the Champions Cup.

“It was good to see Celtic playing in a tournament like that in Johannesburg. Chatsworth earned a big reputation in the past and now we have to revive that,” Maganlal said.

The CDVA are planning for the 2019 season.

“We have to work hard to attract sponsorship in order to keep growing. We believe our league structures are going to get bigger and better. The sport is buzzing again in Chatsworth.”
