Build more schools, not statues

- SHAISTA MIA

SOUTH Africans are aware of the contributions of leaders like Struggle icons Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo, so why build statues that cost R20 million?

Our leaders should stop wasting taxpayers’ money and use it to build schools and hospitals and create projects in these leaders’ names – this would have been a better way to pay homage than such statues.

History and pride in our past is important and should be adopted to a certain degree, but to do it at the cost of better lives for the present and future generations is stupid and a waste.

It is sad that the ethekwini Municipality has lashed out at those criticising the government for the waste. This is hard-earned taxpayers’ money; people have every right to question where it goes and why it goes where it goes.
