CASH SPITS FIRE

Lack of headphones leads to acrimony

- NGWAKO MALATJI

When asked for comment, Makamo says: “This is an internal issue and I will discuss it with the parties concerned.”

Cash refused to comment, while Gill didn’t respond to questions we sent him.

malatjin@sundayworld.co.za LEGENDARY radio DJ Pat Cash’s dispute with his North-west FM station manager Raymond Makamo has bubbled to the surface again.

Cash claims Makamo threatened him after his boss sent an e-mail to the radio jock accusing him of disrespecting management.

“Don t threaten me Raymond. Let it be in order sooner, tomorrow if you can. You have no respect for the rule of law,” says the irate Cash in one of the acrimonious e-mails to Makamo.

Makamo wrote: “You don t recognize management at all but I can assure you that all will be in order soon.”

The quarrel was sparked by the shortage of headphones in a studio during Cash’s show.

Says Cash’s letter: Respect what I do even if you don t respect me as a man. I need headphones to perform and show respect for my work and for the sales people who bring clients for us to interview.

I accept that you may not have an understanding of the psychological effect of not being able to hear yourself or callers when on radio.

Cash continued spewing bile: Don t

“tell me about respect for management I AM respect. I should not be the one reminding you of the importance of headphones.

They are like a helmet to a biker, like cabin pressure to a plane s cockpit.

It was embarrassing last week when we had to host a talk-back with the station s clients Implats, who brought two guests into the studio. We couldn t give them headphones to listen to callers.

Cash also picked a bone with the station’s programme manager George Gill for rudely and provocatively gesturing at him.

“Just don t gesture rudely even if you think you are a better man than me.

I can insult as well, I saw your gesture, I didn t like it. Like a decent man I confronted you about it. So, because you are a better man, play the ball, and leave the man.”
