League expels Mabe in its death throes
EFFORTS by the increasingly desperate ANC Youth League leadership to sideline members perceived as posing a threat to expelled president Julius Malema’s bid to maintain his ever-diminishing influence over the organisation seem to be backfiring.
The current leadership’s efforts to steady what can only be described as a floundering ship, are coming to nothing.
This comes as Pule Mabe – seen by suspicious league leaders as having designs on Malema’s vacant throne – took on the league’s national working committee ( NWC) and national executive committee (NEC) this week.
Mabe, who was removed as the league’s treasurer-general and NEC member last month, challenged both the NWC and NEC to explain the circumstances behind his removal from his positions in the league.
Mabe surprised league officials when he showed up at an NWC meeting on Thursday to resume his role as treasurer-general and NEC member.
A Youth League insider says chaos ensued when Mabe demanded an explanation about his removal from office.
“Procedures were not followed as far as him being removed as treasurer-general and NEC member and Pule just wanted clarity on these issues,” says the insider.
“Despite all of this confusion, he is still within his rights to carry out the duties for which he was elected.”
“The ANC [has] rules and a clear constitution that gives a clear directive in terms of how disciplinary issues must be handled.
“Pule’s removal from office is just one of the many ways in which certain league leaders have resorted to playing dirty to maintain the current situation as it is.” Mabe s suspension was
’ decided at a heated meeting earlier last month, where a vote of no-confidence was passed against him.
He was accused of misusing the league’s money and of not carrying out his duties as required but the ANC seems to feel differently.
Sunday World understands that ANC leaders instructed the youth league to review Mabe’s suspension.
Our insider says this was an indication that the ANC was ready to step in and take control of the league.
Mabe ’ s suspension has divided the youth league, with at least 17 NEC members having reportedly asked ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe to review the decision to axe Mabe.
