‘BROKEN‘ WINNIE MANDELA HOSPITALISED

- MZWANDILE KABIZOKWAKHE and NGWAKO MALATJI

STRUGGLE icon Winnie Madikizela-Mandela (pictured) has been admitted to hospital for what neither the family nor the hospital are willing to disclose.

However, those close to the likeable but often controversial politician say she hurt her leg while at home.

Remember she had a knee “op recently and she has not fully recovered from that. It appears she missed a step and hurt herself,” says the source.

I am not sure if she twisted “her ankle or just aggravated that ailing knee. It is nothing serious under normal circumstances but given her age, it is a concern.”

Madikizela-Mandela, who divorced from South Africa s first

’ democratic president Nelson Mandela in 1997, was admitted to Milpark Hospital on Friday.

The hospital is the same as that which experienced a frenzied descent of the world media last year after her former husband was admitted for a lung infection there. Milpark s Erin Walsh says

’ hospital management is unable to confirm nor deny that they have a patient of Madikizela-Mandela. We are bound

“by confidentiality not to divulge the names or medical conditions of our patients,” she says.

All attempts by Sunday World to solicit comment from her side came to nought. Her PA, Zodwa Zwane, repeatedly blamed ambient noise for her inability to hear our questions.

There is noise where I am. “Can you call in 20 minutes,” she says but later calls were met with the same answer.
