CALL TO ACCOUNT

- Oscar Skommere Sapu general secretary

THE SA Policing Union (Sapu) has learnt with shock, dismay and anger of the alleged misbehaviour of ANC MP Mnyamezeli Booi against police officers recently ( Sunday World May 27).

Booi is not only a senior member of parliament, he was once a member of the portfolio committee on police.

We learnt of his alleged misbehaviour with great shock as we worked well with him during that period.

His alleged threat and reference to Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and his friendship with Gauteng provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Mzwandile Petros is a strong statement that cannot go unchallenged.

We call on the ANC chief whip Mathole Motshekga to ask for an explanation from Booi.

South Africa is a constitutional state where the rule of law is supreme and we are all equal before the law.

This incident will demoralise members on the ground if those with money and political connections are allowed to get away with murder.

There must be consequences for what Booi is alleged to have done, if it’s true. This incident makes a mockery of the notion that we are all equal before the law.

Sapu welcomes the decision of Public Protector Thuli Madonsela to conduct a preliminary investigation into former crime intelligence boss Richard Mdluli as we have two card-carrying members within crime intelligence who fell victim to Mdluli’s alleged abuse of power.
