BSA, SABC kiss and make up
THE long-running impasse between boxing promoters and the SABC appears to be almost something of the past.
This week the public broadcaster announced in a statement that it would consider televising tournaments, provided the corporation was given enough notice ”.
“This was the outcome of a meeting between the SABC s acting COO Hlaudi
’ Motsoeneng and Boxing South Africa (BSA). The SABC has commit“ ted itself to ensuring that we will bring all sporting codes that are of national interest to our viewers,” says Motsoeneng.
In our consultation with “government we were referred to BSA to discuss all issues relating to boxing.
This new approach is an “attempt to create longevity and sustainability for the sport, says Motsoeneng.
” BSA chairman Ngconde Balfour says sports of national interest need to be seen by all South Africans.
Balfour says the SABC will ensure that boxing would be shown on TV and that the BSA will keep to its part of the agreement.
The SABC said it would take about two weeks to finalise which channel would beam the tournaments and to determine scheduling.
In its statement the public broadcaster said the corporation was committed to acquiring the broadcasting rights of all major sporting
“codes ”. Sports Staff
