Less pay for Bafana coach

‘ WE ERRED WITH PITSO’

- RAMATSIYI MOHOLOA

THE next Bafana coach will earn between R400 000 and R500 000 a month

– half of what Pitso Mosimane was reportedly getting before he was fired earlier this month.

This emerged after the first round of interviews of the five candidates who have been earmarked for Mosimane’s job.

Four of the candidates – Ephraim “Shakes ” Mashaba, Gordon Igesund, Gavin Hunt and Neil Tovey

– were interviewed on Thursday. The fifth candidate, Steve Komphela, will be grilled tomorrow. Komphela was excused for Thursday’s interviews because he’s caretaker coach for Bafana, who beat Gabon 3-0 in Nelspruit on Friday night.

One of the coaches interviewed on Thursday told Sunday World: We were

“informed that whoever is to be appointed coach will earn less than what Pitso was getting. ”

Fanyana Sibanyoni, chairman of the Safa technical committee, who is conducting the interviews, refused to discuss the next Bafana coach’s pay packet. But he confirmed that the new coach would not earn the same salary as Mosimane.

It is understood that agreement on the coach’s salary would need to be discussed with Safa’s main sponsors, Absa and Castle.

A Safa executive member, who did not want to be named, said Safa “does not have the money” for a salary similar to that of Mosimane.

“There is no way we will continue paying that kind of money, ” he said. “In fact, we made a mistake from the onset by agreeing to [Mosimane’s] package.”

The committee conducting the interviews includes former Bafana coaches Jomo Sono and Clive Barker along with Farouk Khan, Serame Letsoaka, Bhuda Mathathe and Safa CEO Robin Petersen.

Two other committee members – Kaizer Motaung and ex Bafana coach Ted Dumitru – could not attend Thursday ’ s interviews because they were out of the country. After Komphela’s interview tomorrow, the committee will make a recommendation to the Safa executive who will ratify or reject it.

“At this stage the race is between Bra Shakes and Gordon. Bra Shakes’s presentation was impressive,” said another source, who was present during Thursday’s interviews monitored by auditing firm Ernst & Young.

Carlos Alberto Parreira, who was Bafana coach during the 2010 World Cup, reportedly earned R1,8m a month, the bulk of which was paid for by Fifa.
