SPECTACLES

The Cape Town Idols auditions were rather... ag, shame, writes

- AMANDA NGUDLE

HE pity party was in full swing at the Cape Town Idols auditions this year. They say it’s the highlight of the auditions

– the segment where they follow a contestant home (before or after his audition).

It’s totally random. The nice twist to this year’s waterworks segment is that the producers hype your audition regardless and you only have yourself to blame when you make a mess of things.

One such contestant was Ongama Mona, who came with ambitions of winning the Idols prize and removing his large, extended family from a pink shack. He tortured When a Man Loves a Woman song.

“He must never be allowed next to a mic ever again,” tweeted @Aya777.

But his Facebook page is still drenched with praise-singing!

His friends Chloë Kiley, Shantae Dire and Fistoz Motaung are so tone-deaf they’re all talking about how good Mona is.

Matthew Samson didn’t disappoint his parents. They’d

Tsold his sickly childhood story so well, tears and all, and ran away with the opportunity.

But for mom Thabisa Mhlakulwana, it wasn’t to be.

“If I win Idols I won’t stress about money anymore...”

But she chose Brenda Fassie’s Vulindlela , which proved to be to the detriment of her big dreams.

What a blow for someone who was already dressed for the loot.

Andiswa Yohane’s tighter than tight pants, which displayed her V in all its glory, have been the hot topic on Twitter since last Sunday. She earned the monicker Camel Toe for that.

And a sneak peak into the Facebook account of the University of Cape Town’s law student reveals that this outfit was actually quite conservative by her standards!

Chiwe George did the same, but with some class. Is it so hard to marry taste and ambition? You d have thought it’s

’ impossible if you’d seen Lumkile Tisana s daddy-got-the-blues

– red skinny jeans, a cream jacket and check hat.

It’s a good thing Idols still has a clothing sponsor.

Yes, he got the golden ticket and danced like a taxi driver. But after Lebo Fabulocity”

“Mncayi’s exhibition in a red fascinator, green jumpsuit and navy blue jacket, one began to think fondly of Tisana as a man with

“i nteresting ” taste. The bloke was a joke. Back to singing. Marelyn Mason just had to go and do a shaky rendition of Zahara’s Loliwe. Instead of being mean, Unathi was sympathetic. Now she is also going to Sun City.

And then JP Kelly made a spectacle of himself. After hearing his pathetic self on tape, he declared himself a strong contender. Talk about being kind to oneself!

So far, the Mother City has produced four Idols since 2004.

Heinz Winkler was the first, followed by Karin Kortje, Jody Williams and Sasha Lee Davids.

This time around, I doubt history will repeat itself.
