Expo to highlight career options
HIGH school pupils in and around the Free State who are interested in careers in mathematics and science will this week be afforded an opportunity to experience first-hand what it takes to be an engineer or actuary.
In support of the government’s drive to improve mathematics, science and technology (MST) education, petro-chemicals giant Sasol and the Department of Energy will be hosting the annual Learner Focus Week at the Central University of Technology in Bloemfontein from today until Friday.
This initiative aims to raise pupils’ awareness of the careers in the energy sector and expose them to organisations in the industry.
The expo event will offer activities targeted at Grade 10 and 11 pupils to promote skills devel- opment and career guidance in the MST field. These will include interactive exhibitions and presentations by key companies in the energy arena.
Pupils will be able to participate in maths and science quiz games and the top students will be honoured at a gala dinner to be hosted by the department and Sasol.
Sasol’s Pam Mudhray says the energy giant is committed to promoting the choice of careers in the energy sector.
“We remain proactive in ensuring the successful implementation of educational material and support to help learners realise the importance of working in the energy sector.
“Our collaboration with the department is crucial to give learners a substantial foundation to make informed decisions,” she says.
