PITSO ON A SOCCER MISSION

Legends to be coaches

- KGOMOTSO SETHUSHA

PITSO Mosimane has not let his issues with Safa compromise the interest of football in the country.

Sacked as Bafana Bafana coach earlier this month, Mosimane still has boardroom issues left to sort out with his former employers, but that has not stopped him from serving the sport he loves.

The former SuperSport United coach is continuing with his Legends Coaching Programme, where he helps nurture coaches for junior structures.

The programme is in its second year and Mosimane hopes the 45 coaches, currently undergoing training, will make it as coaches for schools and development structures.

The four-week course, run under the auspices of Safa, has enrolled former PSL players such as Fabian McCarthy, Goodman Mazibuko, Willem Jackson, Eric September and Sam Magalefa as trainees.

“The sports ministry has made clear its intentions to revive school sports and some of these guys should work on those programmes,” said Safa technical director Serame Letsoaka.

“He (Pitso) has forked out about R1 500 out of his own pocket for each of these budding coaches as he is passionate about coaching. And they have, in return, shown appreciation by dedicating themselves to the course.” Mosimane says the problems of development can be better solved by former players, who understand the culture, psyche and tradition of local football. “The legends are well-suited to junior structures as they understand the technique required to deal with issues such as scoring,” said Mosimane.

Confederation of African Football (Caf) will send a representative next month to assess the coaches, who will receive continental accreditation after the course.
