CATCH OF THE DAY

- LOUIS MAZIBUKO

NEW Kaizer Chiefs signing Molomowandau Mathoho has been catapulted into being the hottest property in the PSL.

The player’s entry at Naturena was made more controversial by the manner in which his dad chased away rivals Mamelodi Sundown ’ s delegation led by chief talent scout Daniel “Mambush” Mudau from their homestead in Venda this week.

His agent Tim Sukazi told Sunday World of the unusual manner in which the clubs seeking Mathoho’s signature behaved.

“We were shocked to get calls from the family that people were knocking on their door in the dead of night.

“I was told that a delegation from Sundowns went to the player’s home [on] Wednesday night and wanted to see the player,” said Sukazi.

“I learnt that they pleaded with the father, who instructed them to call me, but they refused.

“The father told them that they should rather go. They had planned to phone after they were chased away.

“We took a decision that the player will go where his heart lies, which has always been Chiefs and this was clearly communicated to Sundowns.

“They however decided other strategies to get the player.”

When approached for comment Mudau refused to say anything on this matter and referred Sunday World to the club’s PRO Kabelo Mosito, who was also not available for comment.

“We have already discussed personal terms with the player.

“That ’ s a done deal for us,” said the Chiefs boss Kaizer Motaung. “We ’ ll be sending the papers back to Bloemfontein Celtic for them to sign.”

Mathoho had been hunted by the country’s top three big-spending clubs, including treble champions Orlando Pirates.

But Amakhosi won the day, mainly because this was the team of choice for the player.

Mathoho showed uncanny maturity when he declined a mouth-watering financial incentive to join the free-spending tycoons of Chloorkop.

Mathoho must have cost Chiefs a fortune to get him to play for them. It is said that Mathoho is so determined and excited about his move to Chiefs that he has stopped training with his club, Bloemfontein Celtic.

His latest move will bring to seven the total number of Bafana Bafana’s players on Chiefs books.

Attempts to get comment from him proved fruitless yesterday.
