NO MORE DRAAMA FOR SOMIZI

Madame Gigi kicks Desmond Tutu's party to the curb

- SIXOLISIWE NDAWO

FLAMBOYANT choreographer Somizi Mhlongo would rather get a tender from the ANC than front for Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu ’ s Draama.

Mhlongo, who was allegedly punted this week as the face and spokesman of Tutu ’ s gay-friendly political party, the Democratic Religious Alliance Against Minority Antagonism (Draama), tweeted: “Rumour has it that I’m the spokesperson for some political party. If it ain’t ANC they Aint Cee-Ng me there. BlackGreenGold 4life.”

Speaking to Sunday World, an annoyed Mhlongo said: “People say I’m the ambassador of this Drambarrabara party. I want to clear the air.

“I said it on Twitter and I will say it again … ANC for life!

“Then people have the nerve to say I take tenders from the ANC. Tell me who would say no to an ANC tender, because I wouldn’t. I would take it. Futhi it must come.”

Mhlongo insisted that Draama has registered with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to take part in this year’s elections.

But his loyalty is unwavering … and was even backed by the governing party’s Free State wing, which tweeted: “We are proud to confirm that Cde @Somizi is one of us and not a spindoctor of nonparties! The ANC leads and our celebs know it #LongLiveANC.”

Draama’s manifesto allegedly advocates for gay economic empowerment and the “democratic right” of polygamy among gay men “in order to tone down the alarming level of unfaithfulness endemic in homosexual relations”.

Another celebrity whose name is entangled in the Draama saga is designer David Tlale, who was allegedly designing the party’s sig-

nature look in “true avant-garde” style, featuring “leathers and feathers” in electric pink.

But Tlale laughed it off, asking: “What is the Draama party?”

Told about his role in the party, he laughed hysterically.

“Oh my God! No! I don’t know anything about this party and I’ve never heard of it.”

Roger Friedman, spokesman for the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation, was less than amused.

“The story is a fabrication. ” Kate Bapela, chief communication officer of the IEC, said Draama is not a registered party.

“As soon as a party is registered, the name, logo and contact details are placed on the IEC website. If it’s not there, it means the party has not yet been registered.” Still, Mhlongo believes in the “reality ” of the party. But he won’t let that dampen his mood because his own reality show is coming up. “I’m excited about it. It’s called

Raising the Bar with Somizi and will focus on my friendship with Linda [Moeketsi, a publicist], the two of us as business partners and the fun we have. ”

But his private life will not be shown.

“No man of mine will be on the show, but people will get to see my daughter once, and that’s it,” he said.

Describing the show as better than Dineo Ranaka’s, Mhlongo said he hopes it inspires.

Mhlongo believes otherwise, but the Draama party is actually fiction and was created as a joke on the satire blog lifestyletabloid.

Raising The Bar with Somizi will air on Multichoice’s Vuzu channel on Friday at 7pm.
