ALTHOUGH former national police commissioner Jackie Selebi was not granted a state funeral, his sendoff was not without political clout.
Selebi’s funeral, which took place in Tshwane yesterday, was attended by ANC members, including its women’s league, youth league and the uMkhonto WeSizwe veterans. The fallen hero’s casket was draped in the ANC flag.
Some of the high-profile personalities included former deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe, police minister Nathi Nhleko and health minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi.
Selebi (64) was hailed by his ANC comrades as a hero who played a significant role in the fight against apartheid.
The former commissioner was disgraced when he was sentenced to 15 years in prison after being found guilty on corruption charges in 2010. He was released from Pretoria Central Prison on medical parole in 2012 after serving less than a year.
He was laid to rest at the Garsfontein cemetery.
