LUYANDA Potwana, the SABC1 love doctor, is accusing the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG) for allegedly wrecking his engagement.
Potwana was laying all the blame for his failed engagement to Busisiwe Majavu at the door of pastor Julio Portela, who is a senior clergy at the UCKG branch in Spruitview on the East Rand where his then financée was a servant.
Potwana (33) and Majavu (24) got engaged in 2013 after meeting in church in early 2012.
This week Potwana, who advises viewers of his show about love, poured his heart out to Sunday World about the reasons for his failed engagement.
I ve been protecting my church like most people do but now I can t live with a lie that I have cheated on Busi. Sometimes I hate myself for telling couples on TV how to stay faithful while I m known as a cheat and liar,” said Potwana.
The church denied the allegations, pointing out that pastor Portela blessed their relationship when asked to do so by Potwana.
There is no truth in the allegation that the pastor did anything to influence the relationship or the breakdown of it. The pastor reports that some time later Busisiwe told him that they had broken up.
It must be noted that it is a common occurrence for aggrieved parties to approach the media with sensational stories seeking sympathy and coverage in preference to addressing the matter through the correct channels. As an assistant, Luyanda Potwana would have known what the correct procedure was to raise any dissatisfaction,” said Universal spokeswoman Nametso Mofokeng.
But Potwana remained adamant that the man of the cloth drove a wedge between him and his ex which led to the failure of their union.
Julio was a ringleader to the detrimental of my relationship with Busi because after that Sunday we got engaged in November 2013, he called Busi into his office and told her to return her church uniform. He then suspended her because she did not perform her duties, instead she went to her engagement party
I confronted him and asked him why would he be so mean and suspend Busi. I told him that I was going to report him to the head pastor and eventually he called Busi and told her she can continue to serve,” said Potwana.
Majavu said: Of course there were jealous people at church about our engagement.”
She refused to name the jealous people.
