A MYSTERIOUS illness floored Orlando Pirate player Patrick Phungwayo and had him confined to a hospital for a few days this week.

It was not clear what bugged the 28-year-old left back as some of his friends said he suffered from breathing problems due to an allergic reaction while his former amateur team-mate said he had a broken rib.

As a result, the Alexandra-bornplayer spent his birthday on Wednesday at the Linksfield private clinic, northeast of Joburg, while doctors performed a battery of tests to determine his illness.

He was discharged from hospital after two days and is understood to be back in training.

When Sunday World contacted the player he was in an upbeat mood but refuted claims that he was hospitalised or suffered any form of illness.

Where do you get that information? Who told you that? I was never sick or in hospital. That is not true,” he said before ending the call.

Two more sources confirmed the Buccaneers star was in hospital after suffering a health scare.

He was chilling with his friends having some meal. He started having breathing problems. He once told us that he is allergic to pork and he could even collapse if he eats it by mistake. So we suspect it could have been the case,” said the source.
