- NIDHA NARRANDES

JOZI is such a maze of exciting places to see and explore. I have decided to make it my mission this year to find some interesting hidden gems.

It has taken me too long to venture out to the Neighbourgoods Market in Braamfontein. It is such a fascinating part of the city. It has come alive in the past few years and patrons flock to the area to experience an untold story of Jozi.

It is very easy to find. The address is 73 Juta Street Braamfontein and parking was aplenty.

The market is open every Saturday from 9am-3pm. I would suggest being there at about 10am, it gets rather busy after 11am.

You are greeted by a violinist on the path to the market, smile on his face, a friendly welcome to every foodies dream.

Rows and rows of fresh food, dessert, drinks, you name it, are on the menu.

You are spoilt for choice, from sushi to curries, Chinese to Italian and beers to fresh smoothies, the market is literally your oyster. Oh, and there are oysters and champagne too.

We tried a little of this and that. The food was fresh and delicious.

Make sure you pop by the Sumting Fresh stall; if you don’t see them you are guaranteed to hear them. They are loud and proud and full of energy, their food is definitely something to shout about. I enjoyed everything my tastebuds happened upon, ribs and wings, salmon bagel, sushi, cannoli. It was a treat, but my pocket felt a little assaulted. While the food is great, the cost is pricey.

So I would suggest going for a treat at the end of the month and not in the middle of January.
