Past goalies spit old fire
Best memory Two stand out. My first one was in the Telkom Charity Cup. There was a cross that came in and Thabo Mngomeni hit a volley and I made a point blank save. Another one is when Shaun Bartlett scored in the last minute from a corner. It finished 1-1 (2006/2007).
Worst memory It was when Jimmy Tau was playing for Pirates. He whipped in a cross for Benedict “Tso ” Vilakazi to score. Pirates won (2-1 in 2004/2005). It was disappointing.
Best result To score the winning penalty (in the Absa Cup final in 2006) was amazing. I mean, come on! (Chiefs won 5-3 on penalties). Worst result I am drawing a blank here. Every time we lost was a bad result. Most difficult
opponent Tso Vilakazi. He was a menace, the little Napoleon.
The late Lesley Manyathela was also good. Watching the derby from
the bench Every time you get the itch to be on the pitch, but I ’ m enjoying my position now.
I still get the butterflies in the stomach. It ’ s a massive game.
Why Pirates will win Because we have a very good goalkeeping department, ha ha ha. I hope the best team wins and I just hope we put on a good performance. We need points.
Best memory There was a save I once made. A shot was deflected. I went to the left, almost outside the goal. The ball fell to Benedict Vilakazi and he hit it with a first time volley, but somehow I managed to get back and make the save. He says I used muti to catch that ball ha ha ha.
Worst memory My first derby in 1993 as a 19-year-old. There was a free kick which Gavin Lane took on the other side of the field and it was played long. As I tried to catch the ball, it went through my hands and into the net. I cried after the game.
Best result Whenever we won, I brushed it off. But when we lost that ’ s where I would analyse and want to do better. I can ’ t remember my best result.
Worst result We lost 4-1 (in 1996) and Jerry (Sikhosana) scored two goals [it was in fact three]. Most difficult
opponent Jerry Sikhosana and Vilakazi. I enjoyed the battle with Jerry. The rivalry with him brought out the best in me. Watching from
the bench As much as one misses playing, it ’ s intense and exciting from the bench. Why Chiefs will win
I think this game comes at a time when our team is gelling. It ’ s an opportunity to stamp our authority and remind other teams that we are still defending champions.
