Not everything that glitters is gold. Young people must look at the bigger picture.”

Rugby is my life, and my life is rugby,” says Blaine Golden, 20, who has been selected to play for the Junior Springboks in a blockbuster Under 20 International Series this month.

“Rugby is a passion and a tool I can use to improve my life and the lives of those around me.”

Planning to dedicate the next one to 15 years of his life to rugby, burly tighthead prop, Golden, who played both Academy and Craven Week, honed his talent from a young age.

Born in Eldorado Park in Gauteng, his mom moved across Johannesburg, and he began playing with the Rugger Kids at Bryanston Parallel Medium Primary.

Moving to Brooklyn Primary in Pretoria where there was no rugby, Blaine joined the University Club and won a bursary to Glenwood High School, a Durban rugby stronghold. His signing with the Sharks last year found him living and playing at King’s Park.

Blaine encourages youth to look at life as a whole. “Not everything that glitters is gold, young people must look at the bigger picture.”
